My Friend, The Journalist

Journalists. We have talked about them in class before. We need them to help us get our message to the media. They are the ones who could make it easy for us...or really hard for us. But how do we go about building relationships with journalists?

I follow Mark Ragan, CEO of Ragan Communications, on Twitter. He offers fairly short articles about the field of public relations and the healthcare industry. As I begin to start my career in public relations I have found quite a few of his articles helpful.

I came across one article this evening that I thought would be worth it to share, PR pros, 10 ways to woo journalists on Twitter.  I thought it was perfect given how much we have been discussing the usefulness of social media. The tips, which are actually written by someone other than Mr. Ragan himself, are pretty straight forward. You follow the journalist on Twitter.  You interact with them. You don't freak them out, offend them, or irritate them. You praise them, and eventually, they might take notice.

Of course this could all be a lot easier said than done, but it is definitely worth giving it a shot. You don't have much to lose, and it could be the first step to building a lasting relationship with someone in the media.

The Digital World

Digital World, Digital Life. A world more connected. A more digital life. We are exploring the living world via the digital one.

Our world is changing rapidly. Much of the technology we use today was unheard of five years ago. The technology can help us connect to others around the world within a minute.

I have read a book about the digital world that we have to learn another side.

Born Digital: Understanding the First Generation of Digital Natives

by

Palfrey, John, Urs Gasser write about the first generation of "Digital Natives" - children who were born into and raised in the digital world - are coming of age, and soon our world will be reshaped in their image. Our economy, our politics, our culture, and even the structure of our family life will be forever transformed.

How aware are you of your digital dossier? Watch this video and find out

The problem with the rapid growth of digital dossiers is that the decisions about what to do about personal information are made by those who hold the information. read more

Palfrey and Gasser state, “The information is held in many different hands, and every party that has access to it is subject to its own rules about what can be done with it. Young people are not asked to make informed decisions about the data collected and stored about them, and even if they were, they would be in no position to make those decisions. Nor can they do much about the collection of the information alter the fact. Over time, the problem only grows”

This passage I think they are very useful for readers. We use and connect the world in daily life, but we don’t realize about dossiers that can be held in the wrong hands. We access the online, such as blogs, websites, videos, musics, and more. We use mobile phone, computer, iPod, or ITune to connect the world. Everything we do online we put so much personal information on the web, whether online banking or personal photos on our blogs. The information can be compiled by web providers and hosts. Then, they can be stored by third party. Moreover, our data can be stolen by hackers. read more. Thus, we should learn how to protect our private information.

Digital technologies are changing our kids in ways we don’t yet understand.  This beautifully written book will set the framework for a field that will change that.  It is required reading for parents, educators, and anyone who cares about the future.

'Great Value' Doesn't Bring Together a Community

I meant to post this forever ago when it was more relevant to what we were talking about, but whatever. Apparently, this "cash mob" concept has made its way to the twin cities-- not that's it too surprising. Since blogger Chris Smith started the first movement in Buffalo, NY back in August of 2011, people have been quick to get on board.

In fact, just about every state has at least one organized cash mob collective (find them here). According to the story, the local cash mob started with only 6 people who all knew each other and now it's sort of become its own monster. They've been fortunate enough to gather a large following with the help of their Facebook and Twitter pages. I was checking out their Facebook events and they're actually having a cash mob event tomorrow at noon at "I Like You" on 1st Ave-- I'd go if I didn't have class. Oh well!

I've officially 'liked' their page and will be making a point to get involved with a local cash mob soon. Woo, local!

Going viral...it's worth a shot

Nice title eh? Well Bennett Olson would probably like it. Whose Bennett you ask?  Oh some guy who spent $300 to have his "Hire Me" ad rotate on a billboard going into downtown Minneapolis on Wednesday.  While it wasn't something I personally saw and while I wouldn't exactly call it viral compared to what we read about in this week's readings, it is getting his name out there.

I personally was made aware of this on a segment I saw on the 6:30pm KSTP news on Friday.  While Bennett only paid for the ad to run for 24 hours, others have picked up on it.  Here is a link from Google News using Bennett Olson for a search term.  Nothing from KSTP, but KMSP has a story along with a couple of other news organizations.

I wish him my luck.  He's got a great website.  Not much experience but his desire says a lot and and I may even copy a couple of his ideas.

Social Media Management Tools

So last month, I had a rant about everything that I needed to log into and keep updated.  I also started investigating different tools that were out there to help with keeping things updated which brings me to the following question.

Does anyone use hootsuite or a similar social media synchronization tool to manage their personal brand and get tracking data? (Yeah sounds kinda gross I know but I think would be a decent tool for our various projects).

Thanks for everything...Mike

I was saddened to learn of Mike Wallace's passing Saturday night.  I never met the guy, but seeing him reminded me of years past, sitting in my grandparents living room, watching 60 Minutes.  My grandfather was never much for conversation, while he watched TV,  but I often wondered what he thought of Wallace.  He never did give an opinion of him.  Nonetheless, 60 Minutes was on the viewing agenda every Sunday in my grandparents home. I attempt to continue the tradition each week  simply because for a few seconds, I'm transported back into my childhood when I hear that ticking clock… Grandma and Grandpa are alive and well.  I can't help wondering if Grandpa and Mike are critiquing one another right now… Grandpa loved to argue politics, and by all accounts, Wallace appeared to enjoy a robust exchange of ideas.  In any case, thank you.  Mr. Wallace for all of your contributions, and the memories, you were  a part of in my life. My condolences to your family and loved ones.  I may have not always agreed with you, but I admire your tenacity in your career and your life.
