“Dialogue”, according to Freire

(GP Blog Post 1)

Paulo Freire (1921-1997) is a famous Brazilian educator.  His concepts include:
·         Teaching using dialogue as opposed to following an establish curriculum
·         Praxis: informed action, tied to specific values
·         Developing a consciousness which can transform reality.

Freire’s dialogue:
·         “Horizontal relationship between persons” (Rule, 2011)
·         Should take place in an authentic educational process
·         Defined by: love, hope, mutual respect, trust, faith
·         Aims to: define and transform the world
·         Defines communications, which makes education possible
·         The opposite of “anti-dialogue”, which does not communicate but issues orders
·         Communication in which agents maintain their identity
·         Happening internally and externally
·         Central to functioning as an authentic human being in society.
